Space for the community
In the Whitechapel Campus, we will create a dedicated community space, linked with ongoing financial support. Our team has had in-depth conversations with local groups. Those conversations have underlined that this space should be purposeful, well managed, accessible, visible and connected to the wider community.
Current thinking is that the community space should have a focus on transformative education - and in particular supporting women or young people. We’d love to hear your thoughts on this. There's a specific question in the Share Your Views survey about this.
Making the streets more pleasant
Local people have told us that around Calcutta House, the streets are either very busy with traffic or dark and neglected. We want to improve this.
We will create a new pedestrian route right through the heart of the campus. You can see this on the sketch plan to the right.
It will be a safe and engaging "social spine” to the campus – allowing local people to feel connected to what is happening here and walk between Goulston and Old Castle Street. The ambition is that ‘after hours’, community groups will be able to use the lecture rooms and classrooms that flow off this walkway.
Around the whole site we will improve the streetscape, making the pavements and road more attractive with planting, seating and places to rest. A pocket park will be made on Old Castle Street.
