How it is now
This is the site that we are proposing to re-develop, with Calcutta House at its heart. It lies between Goulston Street and Old Castle Street.
Many people will know these buildings as the home to the London Metropolitan University who are moving out in the summer of 2026 with exciting plans for revamped facilities in Holloway and Shoreditch. You can find out more about their move here.
With this move comes an opportunity to reinforce this location as a place for learning, which you can find out more about across this website and by coming to meet us at our programme of events.
A brief history
The buildings have a distinct look and a fascinating heritage. By giving Calcutta House a new lease of life, we will work to honour this.
By the 1970’s the buildings were adapted for education use. Becoming home to the City of London Polytechnic, which was later renamed the London Metropolitan University. Also, home for The Cass, which became the celebrated School of Art, Architecture and Design.
Today the buildings look tired, and the site needs to work harder for the local community.
